International Conference on Immigration and Labour Market Integration – A European challenge for the 21st century
13-15 November, 2017, Gothenburg, Sweden
The large inflow of refugees and other immigrants to Europe has created pressing issues for European societies. Among these are how immigrants should be integrated into labour markets, what the obstacles are for integration and how these can be overcome. These issues are in focus in Sweden, due to the recent very large influx of refugees to that country. In 2015, more than 160,000 refugees made Sweden one of the largest receivers in Europe.
This international conference has the aim of becoming an important meeting point for researchers, policymakers and practitioners at a time when the demand for new approaches is great. We invite researchers from a wide range of disciplines, such as economics, sociology, psychology and political science, to present and communicate the latest research in the broad area of immigration and labour market integration. This includes research on the economic consequences of immigration; the effectiveness of labour market policies; the significance of culture, education and discrimination; and the hidden consequences of ill-health and trauma among refugees. We also invite policymakers, practitioners, NGOs and others active in the field to meet new research and new ideas and take part in the discussion of possible solutions.
The following distinguished scholars will provide keynote presentations on the theme of the conference:
* Professor Christian Dustmann, University College London
* Professor Nancy Foner, Hunter College, City University of New York
* Director Olof Åslund, Institute for Evaluation of Labour Market and Education Policy in Sweden (IFAU)
A panel discussion on the theme “Labour Market Integration of Immigrants – A European Challenge” is also planned with representatives of the European Commission, the Swedish Government and international experts.
